How to prepare for Moving Day!

Moving day, whilst a happy occasion, can also be one of the more stressful days in your home-buying journey. From making sure everything is dealt with at your old house to picking up your new keys and liaising with lawyers, estate agents and other homeowners – it's easy to get overwhelmed.

So how can you prepare? Today, we're exploring the best steps to keep your moving day as stress-free as possible to help start your new home journey the right way.

1. Get a good night's sleep

We know that it's easy to lay awake and think about all the things on your to-do list but getting a good night's sleep is crucial to keep things running smoothly on moving day. If you feel well-rested, you'll be able to tackle any issues with a clear head and keep stress levels to a minimum.

2. Get organised

Keep all your paperwork relating to the house purchase, any removals details and transport information in one place so it's easy to reach if you need to verify anything. It's also important to think about who needs to be notified that you've moved address;

  • Your employer
  • National Insurance (which may be done through your employer)
  • Your local council for council tax
  • The electoral roll
  • The DVLA
  • Your utilities providers, whether you want to stay with the same company or not
  • Your GP and dentist
  • Your bank(s)

3. Keep sentimental items close

The last thing you want to worry about on moving day is whether your family heirlooms are surviving the journey in the moving van. Keep any sentimental/important items in a separate bag that stays by your side. This way you can rest assured that they'll make the trip to your new home safely and without getting damaged or lost – one less thing for you to worry about.

4. Say goodbye to your old house

Once all your furniture and belongings have left, it's time to say goodbye to your home properly. Make sure everything is clean and tidy, any appliance instructions and keys are left in a safe place for the new owners and take photos of your gas/electric meters for your final bills.

5. Get the essentials ready

Once you arrive at your new home, you want to make sure you have any essentials you might need on the first day or night ready without rooting through all your carefully packed boxes.

Here's what we recommend;

  • Phone/laptop chargers
  • A basic first aid kit
  • Spare batteries
  • Toilet paper
  • Toiletries
  • Plates/utensils and glasses
  • A change of clothes (inc. pyjamas)
  • Food and water
  • Can/bottle opener
  • Bedding

6. Get comfortable in your new home

It's easy to feel out of sorts on the first night in your new home so make sure you take the time to enjoy it as much as possible. Making plans for dinner and setting up a movie/games night is a great way to relax while you're still trying to unpack.
